Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL)

APL is the term Lloyds College – Education uses for the recognition and award of academic credit on the basis of demonstrated learning that has occurred at some point in the past. This learning may have come about as the result of a course of study – which was either completed or partially completed – or self-directed study.

APL can be used for the purpose of:

  • Gaining entry into an Lloyds College – Education award programme.
  • Advanced standing on an Lloyds College – Education award programme.
  • Credit against some of the outcomes of a programme that will count towards an Lloyds – Education award.

Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL)

This is an extension of APL so that it includes assessed learning gained from life and work experience. As many Lloyds College – Education award programmes are vocational or professionally orientated, a typical example of Prior Experiential Learning would be two or more years of relevant work experience.

Like APL, APEL can also be used for the purpose of:

  • Gaining entry into an Lloyds College -Education award programme.
  • Advanced standing on an Lloyds College- Education award programme.
  • Credit against some of the outcomes of a programme that will count towards an Lloyds College- Education award.

However, you should be aware that the collection and assessment of the evidence you have to provide can be complicated and time-consuming.

Both APL and APEL are used to help students progress onto an Lloyds College – Education award programme where their previous learning overlaps with the area of study. It is far more difficult to use them between very different subject areas.

Award Exchange Programme (AEP)

The Lloyds College – Education Award Exchange Programme (AEP) is for students who have either completed or partially completed the course of study and assessment requirements for an award with another awarding body but who are for whatever reason not eligible for that award. The most frequent reason for this is the closure of the learning institution where the student previously studied.

In the case of students who have completed the course of study and assessment requirements, they should contact Lloyds College – Education to discuss what evidence of completion they will need to provide. This will usually be a letter from your college confirming attendance and copies of any assignments submitted.

In the case of students who have partially completed the course of study and assessment requirements, they should contact Lloyds College – Education to discuss what evidence of partial completion they will need to provide (again this will usually be a letter from your college confirming attendance and copies of any assignments submitted) and what further work they need to complete to be eligible for the award.
